"How to enroll in health insurance during Open Enrollment Period"
Need to get insured or change your plans? It’s now easier, for a limited time.
For ACA plans, typically anyone can enroll during “Open Enrollment” which runs Nov 1–Dec 15, and outside of those dates, people need a qualifying “life change” to enroll (such as a birth, marriage, moving cities, etc).
Due to the exceptional circumstances of Covid-19, most states are now allowing anyone* to enroll without a qualifying life change from Feb 15 through August 15 also – they’re calling this a “Covid Special Enrollment Period.”
In these states, the end dates are slightly different:
California: ends December 31*
Idaho: ends April 30*
Massachusetts: ends July 23
Minnesota: ends July 16*
New Jersey: ends Nov 30
New York: ends December 31
Vermont: ends May 14*
Washington DC: ends when the pandemic is over*
For all other states, the “Covid Special Enrollment Period” is active from Feb 15 through August 15.
* Several states are only allowing uninsured people to enroll without a qualifying life change:
California (anyone is eligible through May 15, after that, only uninsured are), Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Washington DC.
